We love to see the beauty of a place, including the architecture, the plants, the lovely interior spaces and above all, the people. A Saturday in Mexico City is a lively and diverse experience! Older people gather in a plaza every Saturday night to dance cumbia and salsa, dressed in their best and wearing loads of lipstick and hair spray. The music blares through bad speakers and the traffic streams loudly by, but none of that seems to matter as these dancers bounce and spin energetically under the big white tents. On another side of town, we find drag queens dressed up like Disney princesses but the show is already sold out. We pose for a picture with the princesses then move on. We duck into the loudest bar we could find, a completely packed karaoke place where the entire bar full of 40-somethings screams along off-key to Mexican classics. The sense of judgement-free conviviality was contagious and pretty soon I found myself singing along too to songs I'd never even heard before!
